Do you have a favorite literary device? Simile, metaphor, alliteration, or euphemism, perhaps? A little hyperbole is always fun. When I was in high school and learning to write essays for the AP English exam I was quite fond of purple prose. In fact, I almost used that for the name of this blog, but it seemed too specific and a little pretentious, frankly. This definition fits the bill:
Literary devices are specific techniques that allow a writer to convey a deeper meaning that goes beyond what’s on the page. Literary devices work alongside plot and characters to elevate a story and prompt reflection on life, society, and what it means to be human.

Here at Literary Devices you’ll find book reviews, reading lists, and more, all with a literary focus. Basically, this blog is a space for all of my bookish thoughts that don’t seem to fit anywhere else. Maybe e-mail newsletters are where it’s at these days, but they’re such a commitment. I’m much more at home in this little corner of the world. Thanks for stopping by if you’ve made it this far!
